A model walks the runway at the Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Autumn Winter 2012 fashion show

 

1. Ralph Lauren Ralph Lauren is partly responsible for the feminine ’20s -inspired moment you’ve been seeing in the March issues of fashion magazines. So it came as somewhat of a surprise to see him go in the opposite direction for fall with classic, mannish tailoring. The collection was quintessential Ralph Lauren through the lens of British elegance — elongated three piece trouser suits in tweed and Prince of Wales check, chic tuxedos worn with top hats and canes and smartly tailored trousers paired with fair isle sweaters. The femininity emerged later through a series of bombshell gowns that came in satin, velvet and elaborate beading. They displayed a rich, decadent craftsmanship rarely seen in a week dominated by sellable sportwear.

2. Calvin Klein Sometimes a garment is so special that it demands to be in all black —all the better for the eye to focus on the technical prowess that went into making it without any distraction from color or print. This was the case with Francisco Costa’s mostly black plays on architectural shapes, volume and texture such as a midnight-glazed top in wool and mohair worn with cropped, contoured trousers. Each look was precise, confident, controlled — and intense. One could easily see any  of Costa’s dresses on Rooney Mara, who sat in the front row. To highlight the seriousness of it all, models speed walked down the runway like ambitious women with places to go, exactly the kind of shopper who would gravitate towards these clothes.

3. Anna Sui This was Anna Sui’s love letter to the ‘60s. Sui drew inspiration from various references from the decade, including mid-century modern legends Charles and Ray Eames and Alexander Girard, the designer best known for his colorful, folk-inspired textiles. She channeled them into her signature playful aesthetic, with results that included cuckoo clock prints, plaids and floras in bold sea foam, lime, orange and hot pink that appeared on just about every shift dress, jacket and blouse in the collection. There was also a school girl/secretary vibe. Models in oversized glasses wore cozy cardigans in mohair or chunky crochet patterns over sweet dresses with Peter Pan collars or chic, long plaid coats with matching skirts. But the best part was the feeling of happiness the show projected, from the models’ cheery demeanor (it’s like they were instructed to smile) to the jeweled unicorn applique to the cute owl-shaped hats and gloves. This letter was definitely sealed with a kiss.

4. Proenza Schouler We can all now safely declare Asia a trend. Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough joined the growing list of designers who conjured up the Far East in their collections. The reference first surfaced in the impressively constructed white origami-like dresses, jackets, blouses and wide-leg trousers that opened the show, a cool subversion of the traditional karate uniform — almost as if an ass-kicking Japanime heroine went on a shopping spree at Barneys New York. Kimono sleeved coats and chinoiserie print dresses fleshed the theme out even more. It all made for a tougher, more cutting edge interpretation of Asia than the other versions we’ve seen this week — think “Kill Bill” vs. “The Last Emperor.”

5. Michael Kors Only Kors, who made financial headlines this week when he had a 27 percent jump in stock price this Tuesday, could make lumberjack plaid  ooze luxury. But his craggy theme saved the clothes from veering into the “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” trap that his collections have fallen in during seasons past. What the rugged elements did was add an urban edge to his conventionally glamorous look. For instance a Chesterfield coat with an oversize fur collar would have read totally differently if it had been done in Kors’ trademark gray or camel. But in red and black buffalo checks, layered over leather trousers, it looked modern and cool. Sometimes his outsize outerwear reached fashion victim proportions, though, such as the case with a belted Alpaca fringed coat that practically swallowed the model wearing it.

6. Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti Bring on the winter white! For those who think black is the only way to look chic, behold Alberta Ferretti’s fall offerings. The designer started her contemporary line in a palette of elegant bone, which enhanced the minimal, slightly futuristic affect she seemed to be going for with looks such as a skirted suit cinched at the waist with a clear plastic belt. In another look, a jacket came with a plastic overlay. But it was by no means an austere or tech-y show. There was a strong focus on officewear with a modern edge, such as her silver tuxedo suit, as well as plenty of sparkly pieces for when the computers get shut down.

7. Alexandre Herchcovitch It’s been a week of subdued elegance so far, and Alexandre Herchcovitch’s refined collection underscored that point. This is the guy, after all, who once sent models down the runway in giant, cage-like football shoulder-pads in hyper-bright colors. His work for autumn continued the experiment in ladylike dressing he started last season, but in a much less saccharine way. It was bold in color choice with a quiet autumnal palette of burgundy and saffron that quickly gave way to a range of shiny and matte golds. But the clothes were quiet in terms of the ideas he explored — simple suede dresses, tops and skirts with subtly curved lines. The best part was his use of fabric. Who knew lace and suede go so well together? These were dressy clothes for unfussy girls.

Electric automaker Tesla Motors unveiled its third model last night in San Francisco, a long-awaited sport-utility vehicle that marks the company’s latest step toward mainstream America.

Using the same electric powertrain as the Model S full-size sedan introduced last year, the Model X is most definitely more “sport” than “utility,” with low ground clearance, a rakish profile, gullwing doors (Tesla calls them “falcon wings”) and a 0 to 60 m.p.h. time of less than five seconds.

Eat your heart out, Porsche Cayenne.

But it’s that electric powertrain that’s responsible for its most qualities: with the all-at-once-torque capabilities that electric motors offer, the vehicle may perform surprisingly well in inclement weather. (It comes with dual motor all wheel drive.)

Sixty and 85 KwH battery options will be offered.

The key to Tesla’s cool design is the powertrain, built around a flat battery pack that extends from the front to rear wheels under the car. This provides a low center of gravity for good handling, but also allows for substantially more interior space than a vehicle with a transmission running under it.

  

No.10 Sultan of Brunei

In the mid-2000s, the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah reportedly had about 5,000 sets of car keys. Even in the wake of the global financial freak-out, we’re betting his enviable car collection hasn’t dwindled to the hundreds. “Only” and “rare” are recurring descriptives of his cars. And while anyone can configure bespoke models from Bentley, Ferrari and others, he’s one of the few for whom they’ll design exclusive body configurations.

No.9 Jay Kay

Once Jamiroquai made it big, singer Jay Kay wasted no time building his collection. And we don’t just mean the oddball hats. His enviable car collection of 25-plus ranges from an Aston Martin DB5 (the model made famous in the early James Bond films) to a Ferrari F40, the latter getting plenty of face time in the band’s videos. More recently, he’s been understandably smitten with his Ferrari Enzo, praising its combination of performance and ease of use.

No.8 Nicolas Cage

At the height of his fetish, before highly publicised money cramps, Nic Cage was assembling an enviable car collection on pace to rival the aforementioned Sultan of Brunei. He even owned a royal ride: the former Shah of Iran’s Lamborghini Miura.

Makes you wonder how well he could relate to his character’s objective in Gone in 60 Seconds. We understand he at least partially rotated inventory, selling some while acquiring others — including a vintage Ferrari that generated an “it goes or I go” ultimatum from then-wife Lisa Marie Presley. Now you understand why that marriage didn’t last.

No.7 Charlie Watts

Perhaps the most chemically pure of the Rolling Stones (no major feat), Charlie Watts is possibly the most eccentric (now that’s saying something). As bandmate Ronnie Wood describes, Watts has a hugely enviable car collection, yet no licence to drive. He has suits tailored to each car’s character, which he wears when he sits in them and listens to the sounds of the engines. So if and when Watts’ lot is offered at auction, you can at least be assured of low-mileage examples with no foul weather exposure.

No.6 Patrick Dempsey

For once, let’s not tag the Grey’s Anatomy star with the handle we all know and loathe. If anything, call Patrick Dempsey McEnviable, because cars have been a passion of his far longer than moistening ladies’ loins. Besides his Porsche 911 GT3 RS daily driver, classics from Ferrari, Jaguar, Mercedes, and Porsche found their way into his enviable car collection. What’s more, he’s actively involved in the Dempsey Racing and Vision Racing teams, becoming a respected driver while grooming new drivers for the future.

No.5 Brian Johnson

To listen to AC/DC, you’d think the band manager, insurance guys — someone — would keep front man Brian Johnson out of the driver’s seat. Don’t get us wrong. We love the guy and the band, but you’d think if he drives the same way he sings, nothing around him would be safe — birds included. In reality, your swimming pool is safe. The biggest risk he takes is riding his 1957 Vespa, just one component of his enviable car collection. Like Patrick Dempsey, Johnson is also a serious and competent racer, though he favors historic racing.

No.4 Jerry Seinfeld

It’s said every Seinfeld episode has a Superman reference in the dialogue or as a visual. More often than not, you’ll see Porsche represented as well, which is how the comedian prefers to fly. Revered as one of the most serious Porschephiles, his collection is likely rivaled only by the factory museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. In Porsche’s documentary Welcome to the Family, he explains his appreciation of the synergetic form and function found in their vehicles. We’re not sure if the raw footage contained him following that compliment with, “Except for the Cayenne andPanamera.”

No.3 Nick Mason

Ferrari is incredibly selective about who’s allowed the privilege of buying their vehicles, let alone testing them. So when Maranello declined the BBC’s request to use an Enzo on Top Gear, Nick Mason loaned his. The Pink Floyd drummer’s enviable car collection ranges from the Bentley his father raced nearly 60 years ago to another hallowed Ferrari: the 250 GTO. And from what we hear, the multimillion-dollar classic isn’t half bad in the snow. Mason reportedly schlepped his kids to school in the GTO on a winter morning when his daily drivers wouldn’t start.

No.2 Ralph Lauren

Most of us only read highlights of Ralph Lauren’s enviable car collection. A few occasionally see him at the wheel. Two get to peek in his garage. Among the lots for bid in the recent Ralph Lauren Pink Pony Charity Auction: a tour of his stash, led by the man himself. Valued at $150,000, the walk-through wraps up with a ride “in one of these world-class driving machines,” as the auction described. Which may have been a polite euphemism to rule out his $30 million-plus 1936 Bugatti Atlantic.

No.1 Jay Leno

A lot of celebrities happen to have enviable car collections. To enthusiasts, Jay Leno has an enviable car collection and happens to be a celebrity. Thanks to the sheer volume of photos and videos on his website, Leno’s is the most virtually accessible of any private collection. And if you’re in Los Angeles, there’s a good chance you’ll see him commuting in traffic with something from his diverse ranks; he drives as much as he can on a regular basis.
