Luxury Swiss Christmas

at swissinfo.ch

Swiss ski resorts have been offering Christmas discounts to counteract the effects of the strong franc and Europe’s financial woes. But the high end chalet business is doing a roaring trade, with some clients paying up to SFr 200,000 ($215,000) per week for catered chalets in resorts such as Verbier, Gstaad and Crans Montana.

Royal Winter Resorts – Klosters, Zermatt, Meribel, Lech & Verbier

by Felice Hardy at LondonEvening Standard

Nowhere is as romantic as a ski resort, and Prince William first declared his love for Kate Middleton to the world when he took her to Klosters in 2004. Skiing has played its part with the royals over the years, with brides-to-be taken on family ski trips. Here’s our guide to the royal resorts:

KlostersKlosters
Traditional and luxurious, it leads the way as the royal hot spot, so much so that the Gotschna cable-car is also called the Prince Charles and one of the two red cabins bears his name. Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy have all stayed in the resort together. Last year, for greater privacy, they shared a chalet with friends instead of staying in Prince Charles’s old haunt, the five-star Walserhof.

The splendid Eugenia, owned by Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, is the most imposing rental chalet here and for the past two years Prince Andrew has taken it over during the World Economic Forum.

The skiing: Klosters shares the famous Parsenn ski area with its more bustling neighbour Davos.

Where to stay: Hotel Walserhof from £840 pp per week B&B with Ski Solutions (skisolutions.com). Chalets Bear, Maldeghem or Eugenia all through The Oxford Ski Company from £1,888 pp per week half board (oxfordski.com).

See and be seen: Tara Palmer-Tomkinson owns a chalet here; Lord Bamford, a princess of Thailand, Victoria Getty, and (snow) polo-playing Jack Kidd all ski here. Nick Clegg‘s family has a chalet in Davos.

the best Ski Resorts in Europe

At a time when most northern European countries facing the strongest snowfall in the last decades, many are those that do not experience the hassle of delays at airports and stations, but instead revel in the most idyllic landscapes of snow-capped mountain in some of the most famous and expensive winter resorts in Europe where the economic crisis never reached.

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy
«For your eyes only»

A winter resort in the Italian Alps, which owes its fame to the big screen more or less in indescribable natural beauty. It was 1981, when the slopes of the Tofana di Mezzo “evil armed with special snowmobiles” chasing James Bond, they slipped a few exemplary slalom for the needs of the film «For your eyes only». Since then, the slopes of Cortina d’Ampezzo attract winter sports enthusiasts who are not deterred by the sticker prices of accommodation, ranging up to 400 euros a night, as the rough, but excellent slopes at an altitude of 3224 meters.

Is Disentis Skiing’s Next Big Secret?

Christophe Margot for The New York Times

 By CHRISTOPHER SOLOMON at  theNewYorkTimes

IN the early 1990s, Powder magazine, the proudly die-hard ski rag that has weaned countless future ski bums, published an article in which the author spoke of a mystical ski area of unprecedented off-piste challenge. So paranoid was the writer that this mountain’s pristine slopes and elevator-shaft chutes would soon be overrun by, well, the rest of us, that he wouldn’t even name the place. He would only call it — tantalizingly — Valley X.

Secrets are hard to keep in the ski world. People pieced together the clues, and word got out that Valley X was La Grave, France. La Grave became famous.

A few winters later Powder ran a piece about another unknown ski kingdom — a Valley Y — where off-piste runs stretched for a vertical mile or more. The place was revealed as Alagna, Italy. “So many Swedish ski bums” — those shock troops of great skiing —“showed up there and were so rowdy, Alagna had to hire a cop for the first time in its 800-year history,” recalled Powder’s former editor, Steve Casimiro.
