Pendennis completes Phase One transformation

An impressive sight greets visitors to Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, as the yard is now almost unrecognisable from the previous facilities. Extensive development of the site commenced in February 2013, and has seen the previous singular construction hall replaced with two 90m halls alongside a further 45m double-width hall. This complements the existing 150m dry dock, providing a more flexible space for superyacht refit and new builds projects at the 6.5acre site.

The project has been many years in the planning, as joint Managing Director, Mike Carr explained “Since the company was founded over 25 years ago we have continually invested in the Falmouth site to respond to industry demands. When we founded the company in 1988 a 35m vessel was perceived as ‘large’ in the yachting industry! Over the years as yacht sizes continued to grow and refit demand increased the yard has needed to adapt. Since the last major yard expansion, which included the improvement of our dry dock facilities in 2004, the superyacht industry has changed dramatically. Over the past five years in particular Pendennis has seen an increasing demand for winter refits as well as an escalation in the average length of yachts globally. Henk and I recognised that we needed to improve our facilities to cater to this, and so the development plans have been a key consideration for some time.”

Heesen Yachts: Project Necto, 45m sportster is sold!

Heesen Yachts is proud to announce that the first 45m fly bridge vessel YN 17145 – Project Necto – is sold to a yacht connoisseur with a true passion for Heesen core values: Aluminium, speed and power.

This powerful sportster, the largest built by a Northern European shipyard, will be capable of thundering along at an impressive 30 knots thanks to her well-engineered all-aluminium semi-displacement hull and twin MTU 16V 4000 M73L engines. Speed and power combined with uncompromised luxury and comfort are the characteristics of this semi-displacement yacht that will have a range of 2.750Nm at 12 knots.

Frank Laupman of Omega Architects has created the exterior lines of the yacht. True to form Laupman has interpreted the Dutch shipyard DNA with a touch of innovation by introducing the ‘knuckle’ – a design element that interrupts the line of the raked bow and gives this new breed of Heesen — with its much sharper and narrower bow — a particularly aggressive look.

The interior décor of YN 17145 is by acclaimed Italian designer Cristiano Gatto who is currently working on his third project with the Dutch shipyard. The Owners chose a contemporary yet cosy design for the interior of their 45m sportster. Warm Canaletto walnut is the main veneer, which perfectly complements the light tones of Loro Piana fabrics and the warm colours of the different finishes; pale blue soft furnishings give a relaxed and light feeling to the yacht’s interior. Ten guests will be accommodated in five cabins: The full beam master suite is located on the main deck, while the four guest cabins – two twins and two doubles – are on the lower deck.

The Owners dedicated special attention to the outdoor areas of their new vessel; the ultra-spacious sundeck is particularly impressive. As an expansive 84-square metre area, completely free from fixed furniture, it is available for guests to carry out their morning exercise – yet another unusual and particularly remarkable design feature on a yacht of this size.

YN 17145 will be delivered to her Owners after intensive sea trials in the North Sea in January 2016.

The Pendennis Cup 2014

_MG_9885_1.0pendenniscupAs the yachts waited in anticipation on the still waters of Falmouth Bay a party atmosphere prevailed, with water balloons and cannons firing off throughout the fleet during build up start of the fourth race of the Pendennis Cup 2014. It seemed as though there would not be a contest at all as the wind held off, but just 15minutes before the race was due to be called off an off shore breeze started to build gradually edging across the bay – the final race was on!
_MG_9835_1.0A short course was drawn up by the Race Committee, with the initial leg sailing into the ‘Gylly Beach’ mark. Gusts of 12-14 knots combined with the shortened course created exciting close-quarters racing surrounded by a building spectator fleet in anticipation of the Red Arrows display. Velacarina had a great start flying first around the ‘Old Wall’ mark, sailing down to ‘Tango’. Kelpie, who was helmed by her Owner for the first time during the regatta, performed excellently. This lead pair were closely followed by Christopher, then the impressive schooners Adix and Mariette with Breakaway gaining from behind.
With tight sailing throughout the yachts rounded ‘Tango’ in dramatically close succession. However, it was to be Velacarina’s race, maintaining her lead throughout, storming first over the finish line and taking victory of the 2014 Pendennis Cup. Kelpie achieved her best result of the week, taking second place on corrected time, pushing her ahead of Adix and Mariette making her fourth overall and winner of the Spencer Rigging Schooner award. Christopher completed the week in second place overall, after her first week of racing in the UK. She was awarded the Ward Williams prize for Starting Prowess, with an impressive average starting record of just 7 seconds within her allotted start time throughout the week.
The competition between the Little Dennis yachts was no less exciting. The elegantly beautiful fleet of smaller classics had been closely matched all week, with Firebrand and Cerinthe tussling for the lead on each race. positionAll yachts were tight around each mark, with the final elapsed time less than 4 minutes between the first and last boat. Firebrand completed Race 4 just 20seconds ahead of Cerinthe at the final gun, but on adjusted time first place went to Cerinthe by a mere 20 seconds. Although Cerinthe and Firebrand finished the regatta equal on points it was to be Cerinthe’s victory, awarded first place in the Little Dennis Cup on the race count back system.
As the yachts anchored off Gyllyngvase Beach to watch the incredible Red Arrows display they were joined by several hundred smaller craft on the water, with tens of thousands of spectators on the beach and lining the coastal path. The Reds drew a love heart against the blue sky, the competing yachts blasted their canons and the surrounding spectator fleet sounded their horns in a glorious finale to the Pendennis Cup 2014.

Azimut 77S – Innovation for beauty’s sake

AZ77S_runningAzimut 77S, the new model in the S Collection by Azimut Yachts, is making its world debut at the autumn 2014 Cannes boat show.
With four boats already sold even before its launch, the 77S sets the new standard for sport boats. Naturally, it is Made in Italy.
Four boats sold in pre-launch: the Azimut 77S seems to have already taken the road to success in the wake of his younger brother Azimut 55S, the best-selling of which, two years after the launch, were produced as many as 40 units. The yacht embodies that special synthesis of stylistic innovation, technology, and functionality found in all the Italian boatyard’s latest models. The pivoting stern platform for maximum flexibility, the wave-piercing vertical bow – for the first time introduced with the Azimut 55S – the single large deckhouse window, the glazed roof, superior performance, and enhanced fuel efficiency thanks to three engine configuration coupled with Volvo Penta IPS transmission are just some of the main features.
AZ77S_saloneThe most striking quality of this new jewel in the Azimut Yachts S Collection is its streamlined silhouette designed by Stefano Righini. The furnishings and interiors by Carlo Galeazzi are the ultimate in style, with the polished Zebrano wood and hand-sewn leather rendering them breathtakingly precious. There is no doubt about it, Azimut 77S is beautiful.
Azimut 77S is also extremely functional, light-filled, and spacious. The salon and dining area are an explosion of natural light coming from the large lateral windows, the nearly three-metre wide glazed entry doors, the bow windshield, and most of all from the glazed roof. Azimut 77S is literally full of surprises.
The crew area is below deck to the stern. It includes two cabins and a bathroom with separate shower, accommodating up to three crew members. The owner cabin is at full-beam amidships and is a real spatial tour de force. The VIP cabin to the extreme bow is also spectacular, as are the two lateral cabins, obviously each with its own bathroom. Triumph of space on the sundeck too with and a large sunpad and a pilot station.
The innovative features of the Azimut 77S just keep coming, including the engine room. Instead of the more traditional two engines set up, the Azimut 77S is equipped with three Volvo Penta 900 HP Diesel engines, each with IPS transmission. The avant-garde solution means that the engine room is better organised and takes up less space. It also provides for maximum ease of handling and steering and ensures outstanding performance coupled with greater fuel efficiency. This model also has a specially designed keel for superior performance with a maximum speed of more than 36 knots and increased fuel efficiency of approximately 350 l/h at the cruising speed of 32 knots.
The new 77S joins the other upcoming season offerings – the Azimut Grande 95RPH and the Azimut 50 Fly – debuting at the September 2014 boat show in Cannes. The yacht embodies beauty and sportiness, further incontrovertible proof of Azimut Yachts’ role as “ambassador of Made in Italy boating worldwide”.
