King Power : Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot, talks luxury

When the majestic Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of Hublot, talks luxury, everyone listens. He shares his personal convictions and beliefs on the subject of luxury with us

Jean-Claude Biver Talks True Luxuryby Jill Triptree in LuxuryInside

Hublot is the official watch of Formula One, not because CEO Jean-Claude Biver is interested in motor racing, though he does admit to liking the cars, the noise and the smell of oil – “I’m like any man who wants to transform the toy cars he once had into a sports car, a helicopter” – but because there is a synergy between the two.

“Most people who like cars like watches,” says Biver, who was in Hong Kong late last year to present the latest Hublot F1 watch, the Monza. “I’m only interested in [doing what's best for] Hublot, that’s it, I won’t steer the company in a direction which doesn’t suit it for personal reasons. You see, I never brought Blancpain to F1; it wasn’t the right fit.” Hublot and top-end motor sport share the same customer base, high technology, search for new ultra-light materials and a certain racy glamour so “to enter this world was logical”.

Alain Ducasse Gets Back to Basics

by Laurie Kahle at Robb Report

Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athenee-Ris de veau carottes. To mark the 10th anniversary of his three-Michelin-star restaurant at the Plaza Athénée hotel in Paris, Alain Ducasse decided it was time for a change. With a desire to get back to basics, Ducasse implemented his new Essentiel concept, which eschews flamboyance and fussiness in favor of purity, quality, and authenticity. Ingredients are carefully sourced from Ducasse’s handpicked suppliers and served at the peak of seasonal freshness. For example, scallops from Normandy, where water conditions are prime for the shellfish, are gathered in the morning and served that very evening. Technique takes a backseat so the supreme ingredients can shine, unsullied by superfluous flavorings and fancy treatments. The less-is-more statement also translates to the table decor, which has been pared down from the typical extravagant array of flatware and dishes. Complementing the enormous glittering chandeliers and shimmering new decorative screens handmade by Paris’ haute-couture masters, tables are minimally set with sculpted, modern, porcelain plates specially designed to hold the menus. In another insouciant move, an appetizer of tender crevettes is served in the sauté pan with a long, delicate fork. Such casual touches may seem out of place in a dining room of such stature, but at Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée the reverence is reserved for the food.

Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée is open for lunch Thursday and Friday and for dinner Monday through Friday. Average price à la carte is about $345, not including beverages. (www.plaza-athenee-paris.com)

Why Dressing Well Is Costing More

By Kristiano Ang at TheWallStreetJournal

For years, many of the rich and famous and the sartorially smart have sought out Hong Kong and Singapore tailor shops for a bespoke suit. The men were all after one thing: the look of Savile Row at a fraction of the price. But inflation is creeping into the apparel industry, and prices for those fine suits and shirts are on the rise.

One Hong Kong tailor that has raised its prices is W.W. Chan & Sons. According to Patrick Chu, the head cutter there, a standard two-piece suit made from VBC wool goes for about 9,000 Hong Kong dollars (US$1,160), up 10% in two years. VBC wool, from Italian maker Vitale Barberis Canonico, is considered good quality, but is not the highest-quality material.

The Electric Rolls Royce: Luxury firm plans Eco-friendly Vehicle as Sales see 171% rise

Confirmed: There has been intense speculation over the last two years that Rolls-Royce was planning a top secret electric Rolls-Royce

Confirmed: Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, CEO of Rolls Royce, told the Daily Mail before Christmas that an electric or alternatively-fuelled model would be a ‘good idea’

By Ray Massey at DailyMail online
At 15 miles to the gallon, the Phantom is hardly a car for the carbon-conscious. But all that might be about to change. Rolls-Royce is planning an electric limousine, which would be rechargeable…with zero emissions. There has been speculation for two years that Rolls-Royce was planning a top secret electric model.

Then, before Christmas, Rolls-Royce’s chief executive said an electric or alternatively-fuelled ‘experimental’ Rolls-Royce model would be a ‘good idea’. And yesterday, Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes confirmed ‘all options’ for alternatively-fuelled vehicles were being considered.

A super-green car for the wealthy could be on the road in time for the 2012 Olympics where parent company BMW will be showcasing its ground-breaking electric and environmentally-friendly technology to the world. The company’s flagship £300,000 Phantoms currently manage just 15 miles to the gallon.

There has been intense speculation over the last two years that Rolls-Royce was planning a top secret electric car. Mr Mueller-Oetvoes increased that speculation when he told the Daily Mail before Christmas that an electric or alternatively-fuelled ‘experimental’ Rolls-Royce model would be a ‘good idea.’ BMW, which also owns British-based MINI, has already launched an electric powered MINI-E which can be re-charged from the mains.

With the world’s eyes watching the 2012 Olympics – where parent company BMW will be showing off their low-emissions cars to ferry 80,000 VIPs to and from venues – it could be the perfect opportunity to showcase just such a vehicle running on electric power, or even a fuel-cell.

Mr Mueller-Oetvoes said:  ‘We are not going to make any rash decisions. It would be wrong for the brand and wrong for our customers if we were to take a decision without fully exploring all options.’

Traditionally, Rolls-Royce has produced one-off ‘experimental’ models to showcase to potential the luxury car company’s latest technological advances. When the Daily Mail pressed Mr Mueller-Oetvoes before Christmas that a super-green electric Rolls-Royce using the latest in environmentally-friendly technology for the super-rich with a conscience would make an ideal new ‘experimental’ model, he acknowledged it would be a ‘good idea’.
He was speaking as Rolls-Royce announced record annual car sales in 2010 – up 171per cent on 2009 and more than double the previous record of 1,212 cars set in 2008. In 2009 the company sold 1,002 cars. The USA remained the biggest single market for Rolls-Royce in 2010, followed by China and the UK with all areas showing ‘significant growth’, particularly in Asia Pacific, the USA and the Middle East.

Wealthy women buying the smaller ‘baby’ Rolls-Royce Ghost models are fuelling the boom in sales from the company’s hi-tech factory is in the grounds of the Earl of March’s Goodwood estate. Pop star and Geordie X Factor judge Cheryl Cole has one of the £196,000 cars, and British gangster movie director Guy Ritchie, former husband of Madonna, took delivery of one before Christmas.

The company sells about three Ghosts to every one Phantom. Mr Mueller-Oetvoes told the Daily Mail that women are attracted to the car’s ‘masculinity’ and now account for up to 10 per cent of sales of the Ghost, a more compact and ‘less formal’ Royce saloon than the massive £300,000 Phantom. ’Women love their Ghosts. But they are not buying a car for women. Rolls-Royce is a male brand. And women like that. It’s a nice masculine car.  But female customers do like to customise their interiors with a more feminine choice of colours and detailing, leathers and stitching, he said.
Although sales are bucking the economic gloom, the Rolls-Royce boss did admit that colour schemes are more in tune with the downbeat mood, with a shift from ‘bling’ to more subtle interior shades: There’s a degree of sobriety.’

Harry Winston Ocean Lady Zalium Watch

by Ariel Adams at Luxist

At 36mm wide this is definitely a woman’s watch. But if it was larger I could envision a few men who could pull this off. White and red is surely a “showy” combo – and you don’t see it that often. What is this “zalium?” It is an alloy that Harry Winston likes to use to made of a blend of zirconium and aluminum. In addition to being light (and used for aeronautical purposes) it is said to be hypo-allergenic and resistant to corrosion. Is this metal necessary in a jewelry watch? Not at all, but part of what comes with the high-end watch experience (a bunch of people looking for odd materials to use).

Zalium is mixed with diamonds for decoration on the case and dial. While the dial design is complex, the Swiss automatic movement only shows the time (with subsidiary seconds dial) and a moon phase indicator. The Ocean Lady Zalium comes on a white rubber strap for a sporty, iconic “Ocean” look.

Royal Winter Resorts – Klosters, Zermatt, Meribel, Lech & Verbier

by Felice Hardy at LondonEvening Standard

Nowhere is as romantic as a ski resort, and Prince William first declared his love for Kate Middleton to the world when he took her to Klosters in 2004. Skiing has played its part with the royals over the years, with brides-to-be taken on family ski trips. Here’s our guide to the royal resorts:

KlostersKlosters
Traditional and luxurious, it leads the way as the royal hot spot, so much so that the Gotschna cable-car is also called the Prince Charles and one of the two red cabins bears his name. Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Chelsy Davy have all stayed in the resort together. Last year, for greater privacy, they shared a chalet with friends instead of staying in Prince Charles’s old haunt, the five-star Walserhof.

The splendid Eugenia, owned by Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza, is the most imposing rental chalet here and for the past two years Prince Andrew has taken it over during the World Economic Forum.

The skiing: Klosters shares the famous Parsenn ski area with its more bustling neighbour Davos.

Where to stay: Hotel Walserhof from £840 pp per week B&B with Ski Solutions (skisolutions.com). Chalets Bear, Maldeghem or Eugenia all through The Oxford Ski Company from £1,888 pp per week half board (oxfordski.com).

See and be seen: Tara Palmer-Tomkinson owns a chalet here; Lord Bamford, a princess of Thailand, Victoria Getty, and (snow) polo-playing Jack Kidd all ski here. Nick Clegg‘s family has a chalet in Davos.

Fashion trends 2011

by millionlooks.com

We all want to look fashionable but this is impossible without knowing modern tendencies in the fashion world. Some of the Spring/ Summer 2010 trends will be out and some will still be hot. And a few absolutely new trends will shatter the glamorous world soon.

So, the Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011 trends are the following:

Sexy turtlenecks. Although the turtleneck seems to be one of the clothing items that simply cannot be sexy we say that sexy turtleneck is a hot trend for Autumn/ Winter 2010/ 2011 season. Everything depends on how you wear it. Try to mix colors and add some funky accessories to your look and the turtleneck will change from the very dull to a stylish piece.

High collars. These aren’t only fashionable, they are very practical as well. In addition to making you look modern high collar will keep you warm from cold winter winds.

Maxi dresses. Femininity will always be fashionable. So, dear ladies, if you feel the need to look womanly, maxi dress will be the perfect option. Lots of styles of maxi dresses will help you choose something that will fit your figure ideally.

Military. As a huge contrast to the lattest trend comes the military style that is getting more and more popular with women all over the world. Even Gisele Bundchen wore military for the photo shoot for Vogue, isn’t that a good reason to try this trend?

Patchwork. To wear patchwork you have to be creative because if you put too many accessories on you’ll definitely overdo, but if don’t put any something will be missing. What is great about patchwork is that you’ll never be one of a crowd, you have millions of ways to stand out.

Poncho. This trend will require great fashion skill from you. Poncho is not an ordinary item, so being able to complete the outfit with it successfully is not easy. Be creative and it will work!

Quilting. Winter is cold and the warmer garments you wear the better. Quilting technique is always used for making coats because it provides warmth to the wearer. And It looks great, too!

Thigh-high boots. These boots have become a favorite with many women. They look sexy and feel comfortable. To add to this, they provide a great coverage to the leg that is essential for winter time. So, it’s still a trend and you have one more season to rock your best pair!

Wide pants. Lots of wide pants were presented at fashion shows this spring. Some were simple and monotone while others were full of color and sparkle. So, it’s up to you to choose what’s closer to your wardrobe.

Fringe. A few seasons ago fringe was one of the top trends and now it seems to be coming back. However, this time fringe isn’t as widely used. It goes only on clothes. No shoes, bags or any other accessories see so much of it this fashion season.

Gloves. This fashion trend for Fall/ Winter 2010/ 2011 comes as no surprise as we all pack up with at least two pairs of gloves for the freezing season of the year. But you can feel free to choose fingerless or lacy gloves now because they are extremely popular though hardly practical.
