The Panama Hat, an all-time classic accessory, this summer fashion hit!

With a history dating back to at least 4000 BC (and the modern form taking form after the appearance of Spanish conquistadors in Ecuador), these hat have a long and glorious history.  The prehispanic cultures of Ecuador used the toquilla to make headwear for thousands of years before Spanish explorers made contact and got local artisans to produce hats in traditional European styles for them to wear while in the tropics.

In 1835, an entreupenuer named Manuel Alfaro settled in Montecristi and opened his hat weaving business.  Shortly after, he started to export to Panama before setting up shops there.  After this, these hats became known as Panama Hats because Panama was the most important commercial centre for the trade of the hats (and many other items), despite most of them being made in Ecuador.

This summer Panama hat is the absolute fashion accessory. Look who’s wearing Panama hats

Why Fashion Seemingly Snubs the Internet: A Defensive

by Elizabeth Cordry at the Huffington Post

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the fashion industry has been notoriously slow to catch on to digital media. The few brands that have taken tentative steps towards using the internet to its full advantage, such as Burberry and Chanel, are being lauded as progressive, but when compared to other industries fashion is still woefully behind. From journalism and
retail, to the back-end of wholesale buying, the fashion industry has on the whole squeaked along in the same way that it has for many years. Many observers blame this state of affairs on the industry’s concern for maintaining exclusivity; other say the internet simply is too ugly, not “on-brand” for high-end companies. These arguments have merits, but I believe they slow the process rather than stall it. It is possible that there is also a deeper structural issue in the industry that explains much of the trepidation.

Demand Rises for Flying Pets on Private-Jets

by Robert Frank – The WALL STREET JOURNAL blog

Automotive execs might still be wary of flying on private-jets. But demand for flying private seems to be on the rise for another, more-selective segment of the traveling population: pets.

Brian Fiske, founder of PetJets.Net, a charter brokerage service for pets and owners, said he has been flooded with calls in the past month by pet owners wanting to book private-jet flights for their pets.

The main reason is the recent news of seven puppies dying in the cargo hold on an American Airlines flight.

Not that PetJets is trying to exploit the news. But Mr. Fiske said that since many of the callers were new to private charters, and were surprised at the high costs, he decided to try to expand the program and make it affordable to more pet owners.

Fairmont Hotels unveils own iPhone app for luxury travel

By Rachel King

Luxury could be at your fingertips with the new iPhone app from Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, which actually boasts more than just an online reservation service.

Also compatible with the iPod touch and the iPad, the Fairmont application is intended to act like a personal “concierge.” Some of the standard features include information about availability, pricing and Fairmont locations worldwide.

One of the more notable aspects is the Destination Guide feature, which uses the device’s GPS ability to track down restaurants, events and other attractions near your hotel with both exact walking and driving directions.

The Fairmont app is available in iTunes now, and for such a fancy app that will probably lead to a lot of spending, it’s free.

Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vutotal and other Classics

by Jonathon Ramsey, video by DtRockstar1

1939/47 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vutotal Cabriolet by Labourdette Will Make a Rare Appearance at 7th Annual Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance

The renowned Fairfield County Concours d’Elegance announced that the legendary 1939/47 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vutotal Cabriolet by Labourdette, will make a rare appearance at its 7th annual event courtesy of the John W. Rich Automobile Museum. The Rolls-Royce Phantom III Vutotal Cabriolet, now in the John Rich Museum collection, started off as a standard Phantom III designed by Henry Royce. It was re-envisioned by coachbuilder Hooper and Co. in 1938 with a Sedanca de Ville for the chassis, then showed off in Europe before being tweaked for the U.S. market.

The car was rebodied in the 1940s by famed coachbuilder, Henri Labourdette of Paris, who was best known for his extreme designs and obliterated of anything that identified it as a Rolls Royce. Labourdette often experimented with aerodynamics, and decided to develop a swooping open body for the chassis at a cost of $44,000, at a time when the average price of a home was about $4,000.

Throughout the years, ownership of the car changed hands several times. After it was transformed into Labourdette’s creation, the car was sold off to different owners, including a New York plastic surgeon, a drug dealer who ended up in a Cuban prison and even S. Mars, possibly of the candy empire. In the winter of 2005 John W. Rich of Pottsville, Pennsylvania purchased the car for his extensive collection.

The 7th annual Concours will take place September 11-12, 2010 at the Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport, Connecticut. The event will be a showcase for both the best of automotive and motorcycle design and engineering excellence. It will also serve as a forum for the education of its guests. This year, the event’s featured judging classes will include Porsche, Bugatti and Period Custom Cars from 1948 – 1964. Special exhibits will include the 24 Hours of LeMans, ‘Styled by the Wind’ celebrating automotive aerodynamics and a collection of elegant Packards with coachwork by Howard Darrin.

The show has donated more than $100,000 to its charity The Next Steps Development Center, a partnership of AIND/Giant Steps School and St. Vincent’s Health Services providing diagnostic and treatment services for adults and children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The Fundamental Golf Pre-Shot Routine

 by Golfgist

Planning the shot ahead, approach from behind the ball. Pick an intermediate target. Aiming at something new a few feet away is easier and more accurate than aiming at 200 yards away. Approach the ball and take a stance about a foot back where you will make your next shot. Take a smooth practice swing. Focus all your attention on your upcoming shot. Take your final stance and start your backswing with your personal swing key. This is an example of a typical pre-shot routine. Yours may differ. It is important to develop your own routine.

Purpose

  1. To develop your own standard pre-shot routine. Your routine doesn’t have to be exactly like the one shown but it should be consistent. It is designed to make sure you have picked your intermediate target, decided on your landing area, visualized the ball’s flight, and you are fully concentrating on your shot.
  2. To increase your concentration. Your pre-shot routine should turn on your own concentration. Up until that point you can be a laughing and joking, but when you start your routine you shift into your concentration mode. If someone or something disrupts your routine – Stop – back off and start your routine.
  3. To start your swing smoothly. The pre-shot routine concludes with you activating your swing keys (thoughts) used to begin your swing. For example, if the key your use to start the backswing is “low and slow”, this will actually be the final component of your routine. The more you practice this on the range, the more it will become part of your routine.

Do’s and Don’ts
Practice your pre-shot routine on the range. It is difficult to learn on the course, even during the practice rounds.
