Dealing with Luxury Travel

by Fanis Zacharis– Editorial for newsletter 1

Our decision to deal with the high-end luxury part of the travel market impelled me to define what is “luxury travel”, what type of travellers involve to, what services they are looking for, how someone can establish in the luxury travel marker, and not only, since the customer behavior and attributes are common in different luxury aspects, I mean when You travel in a luxury destination, it is most probable to buy luxury brands, jewels, pamper yourself in a spa, service a limo, and so on.

I went up to the etymology of the word, the roots of word luxury are from Latin.  Luxus meant “abundance” and “sumptuous enjoyment” , however, not exactly with a positive meaning; luxus evolved from Latin’s luxuria mean “lust” and “debauchery.” Nevertheless, I would prefer the Greek origin of the notion, that is, poly-teleia or in other words, very much perfect. This is certainly the sense reflected in a particularly long entry at Urbandictionary that talks of private jets, personal chefs, yachts and your own grass tennis court.

Claridge’s: London’s Art Deco Jewel

by Carrie Coolidge

Located in the heart of Mayfair in London, Claridge’s hotel is nominated for a Readers’ Choice Award for Best City Hotel. The historic art deco hotel is known for its award-winning service and luxury and is a key part of London’s history. Stars, statesmen, socialites and the crowned heads of Europe have enjoyed this five-star hotel for more than 100 years. Its grand hallways and staircases were designed to be wide and spacious so that ladies wearing wide skirted ball gowns, with crinolines, would be able to walk two abreast.

Another reason to visit Necker Island – the Necker Nymph

kadenaLuxuryTravelkadenaLuxuryTravel introduces Necker Island, Sir Richard’s Branson creation, Virgin Limited Edition.  Now You have an extra reason to visit Necker Island at BVIs; the Necker Nymph, the first aero submarine.

You don’t happen to know Necker Island? let us give some lovely history.  Its was back in the early 1980s, when a twenty-something Richard Branson wanted to impress a lovely lady called Joan. He heard a rumour that an island was for sale and that the Real Estate Company would offer hotel accommodation, flights and a helicopter for anyone showing an interest in looking to buy the island. So in his quest to impress Joan (who is now his wife of over 20 years!), he took her to see Necker, and they both fell in love with the island. But the asking price was far too high for Richard. However, some months later, the price had reduced and he was approached, so Richard became the proud owner of his own island and new home. …In the end he did get the girl and the island!

El Bulli to close for good

by Joe Warwick

For now …Ferran Adrià has told the New York Times he will transform El Bulli into a culinary academy. Isn’t that what it already is?

Ferran Adrià has delivered a second killer blow to those still dreaming of securing a table at El Bulli, his restaurant on the north Catalan coast, feted for its creativity and cursed for being absurdly oversubscribed. Following Adrià’s shock announcement late last month that El Bulli was going to stop serving diners during 2012 and 2013 and would re-open in 2014, he’s now told the New York Times that El Bulli will, in fact, permanently cease to operate as a restaurant after December 2011 and be reborn as a cutting-edge academy for the world’s most talented cooks. There’s near-hysterical reaction to this “news” online from food lovers who never had a snowball in hell’s chance of getting there anyway, but before we start sobbing into a large bowl of savoury ice cream, the El Bulli books strewn with tissues and My Way on in the background, it’s perhaps time to first calm down and consider what’s actually going on.

“Lobster” and “Shelley”

kadenaLuxuryShops present Lobster and Shelley models, promising proposals for the classic lounge chair of the future. They are beautiful, extraordinarily comfortable, and when it comes to materials and craftsmanship – only the best is good enough. The designers behind Lobster and Shelley, Oluf Lund and Eva Paarmann,

have worked with furniture, inspired by the skeletons of the crayfish for quite a while. The fascination by the shell, which doubles as skeleton and shield of these animals has resulted in a very sculptural and comfortable chair with a – so far – unseen construction, which is very strong – like the skeleton of a lobster. The chairs consist of a laminated shell of beech with an outside veneer of either oak or walnut. The oak veneer comes in both natural- and black stained oak. The chairs and stools are upholstered with Passion leather. The leather is sturdy full grain semi-aniline leather made out of the best European bull hides and is charaterised by its natural grain and smooth semi-aniline look.

The colours are black, sand, brandy, red or darkbrown . Also available in customized materials as well as fabrics and wool fabrics.

The swivelbase is matt crome-plated steel with a spring effect. The base is also available in black structure “noir”. Lobster and Shelley are produced in Denmark, in the very best materials from the very best Danish suppliers. No compromises. No short cuts.

UAE distressed asset sales soar

Bradley Hope and Ivan Gale

DUBAI // The Emirates has emerged as one of the largest distressed-asset markets in the world in the past year, with cash-rich buyers taking advantage of discounts of up to 40 per cent on aeroplanes, yachts and high-end cars, brokers say. “The UAE is the number one market for buying and selling these assets right now,” said Noam Perski, the chief executive of JamesList, an online bazaar for luxury goods. Expensive cars such as the Ferrari 430, targeted at first-time sports car buyers, have hit the market in the largest numbers.
